Public anger against inflated electricity bills prompts PM to call emergency meeting

Customers are protesting the recently increased tariffs on electricity bills on Pakistan’s streets.

Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the interim prime minister of Pakistan, has consequently asked for an urgent ministers’ meeting on Sunday to address the high electricity costs.

The prime minister announced the meeting on X, the site that replaced Twitter. “In the meeting, a briefing will be taken from the Ministry of Power and distribution companies and consultations will be held regarding giving maximum relief to consumers regarding electricity bills,” he said.

One person told the newspaper Dawn that because of his extremely high electricity bill, he was unable to afford to pay for his kids’ school expenses. Another individual said that his bill had doubled.
